(KNSI) – 750 members of the Minnesota National Guard returned home over the weekend following their deployment to Washington, DC for the presidential inauguration.
Four hundred touched down in Minnesota Saturday, and 350 landed on Sunday. One hundred stayed in Washington to continue working security detail until at least sometime next month.
Of those coming home were members of the St. Cloud-based 682nd Engineer Batallion, the St. Paul-based 133rd Airlift Wing, the 148th Fighter Wing based in Duluth, along with the 94th Cavalry Regiment, also based in Duluth.
Members of the Minnesota National Guard also were part of Task Force Metro, watching over the state capitol in St. Paul after threats late last month. Those threats, public safety officials said, had diminished by the time inauguration day rolled around. Planned protests ahead of January 20th also never came to fruition after organizers claimed they told people to stay away due to fears of people getting out of hand.
